What’s Wesenwille?

Wesenwille is a term coined by Ferdinand Tönnies in his sociological text “Gemeinschaft & Gesellschaft”.  In it, he defined community (or the rough translation thereof) as being composed of people with “essential will” (Wesenwille) where they saw themselves as part of a community achieving common goals.  He defined society as being composed of people with “arbitrary will” who see the community as a means to further their own goals.

This blog looks at how media and technology can be used in bringing together and engage communities.  To me, the use of social media is all about wanting common goals to achieve community, so WESENWILLE sounded like a great name for this blog.
